BioLP technology: the first direct printing of living cells in mammals
Bio 3D printing has always been the most exciting application in the entire 3D printing industry. In fact, this technology is not as new as you and I imagined. There have been related applications since more than a decade ago. Dr. Bradley Ringeisen is in the field of bio 3D printing. One of the pioneers, he is the head of the chemical department of the US Naval Laboratory (NRL), focusing on bioenergy and bioremodeling research.
Recently, Dr. Ringeisen was awarded the title of “Quarter Scientist†by the Ministry of Defense for his research in the field of biological 3D printing.
If you have been concerned about bio 3D printing, you will know that many companies and organizations have begun to print cells, tissues and even organs. The technology they use is nothing more than the use of "ink" mixed with human stem cells and nutrient-enhanced gels or liquids to mix and print soft tissues that are acceptable to the human body. In general, bio 3D printers are custom made. Dr. Ringeisen has developed a completely different approach based on the extruders of common 3D printers. This method is called Bio Laser Printing (BioLP) and has been approved by the US Naval Research Laboratory. At the time of patent application, this technique is described as follows:
“This technology creates a microarray of proteins and other biological materials by focusing laser pulses to concentrate biological material from the three-layer target onto the receiving plate. In this process, the transparent support layer allows the laser pulses to collect themselves and absorb The junction of the layers, thereby pushing the biomaterial to the designated location on the receiving plate."
These biological materials include cell "inks", gels, solids and biomolecules. Dr. Ringeisen was the first to use the technology to print mammalian cells and bacterial cells. In addition, he added a laser absorbing layer to protect the biomaterial from the UV damage of the laser.
Bio-laser printing technology is unique because it does not use traditional microtube or capillary printheads, all without the clogging of the printhead, and the ability to print a variety of materials.
Using bio-laser 3D printing technology , Dr. Ringeisen and his colleagues printed live microbes directly from soil samples, creating the possibility of discovering new microorganisms and enzymes, further developing new antibiotics, biofuels, and achieving carbon dioxide cure. . At present, this technology has been able to print out replacement cells to achieve regeneration of bone marrow nerves. In fact, bio-laser 3D printing technology has a wide range of life-saving applications. The US Naval Research Laboratory hopes to use this technology to treat some common military diseases such as traumatic brain injury, burns and hearing impairment.
Dr. Ringeisen
It is understood that Dr. Ringeisen will continue to study bio-laser 3D printing technology and look forward to his latest research results.
