Famous artists use 3D printing technology to create gold statues
Thanks to the efforts of artists from all over the world, 3D printing is becoming a part of the art world. Most importantly, in the meantime, not only are some young and cutting-edge artists wanting to use it to create something different. The fantastic collaboration between Eileen Borgeson and Russ Ogi also shows that the famous artists are beginning to realize the creative potential of 3D printing technology . A few days ago, the two artists worked together to create a gorgeous gold leaf decorative statue, Freedom of Flight, with 3D printing as an art medium. This masterpiece is currently in San Francisco's Innovation Hangar. display.
Speaking of Eileen Borgeson, it may not be necessary to introduce more. In the past 30 years, she has made great achievements in decorative art sculpture and glass art. She can see her works in many private and corporate collections around the world, from John Lennon Estate, Warner. Brothers, Disney, Sony to Aerosmith, and have won numerous awards. She is particularly keen to incorporate different media into her work, from copper, crystal, stainless steel, neon, Led materials, to cutting techniques such as waterjet cutting and CNC machine tools.
Therefore, this time involved in 3D printing technology and working with Russ Ogi is also being cleaned up. From Hawaii, Russ Ogi is a mixed-media artist with a 3D printed background and 20 years of experience in the high-tech industry. He specializes in creating works of art using 3D printing and carefully performing surface treatments by hand.
It is understood that the origin of this collaboration is one of a series of sketches that Borgeson calls DNA. A statue created on DNA a few years ago was given to legendary entrepreneur Elon Musk. Inspired by Borgeson's partner Jeff Allen, this 2D design was renamed "Freedom of Flight" (or "Freedom"). Because of the mixed style of this design, Borgeson has been searching for the right art medium to show it for many years. For this reason, "freedom" has become the most challenging sculpture in her creative career. “The last 3D printing appeared, and I saw a viable way to achieve all the negative space in this sculptural design... and then we found Russ,†Borgeson said.
They soon started working together. For Russ, it is no stranger to turn 2D images into 3D models. Russ quickly used the Maya design software to turn Borgeson's ideas into 3D.
Borgeson was very pleased with the work of Russ, so two different versions of "Flying Freedom" were subsequently printed in 3D: a prototype and a final version. These two versions use different 3D printing technologies. The smaller prototype is 7 inches tall and uses a CubeTrio 3D printer , while the larger version uses the Form 1 SLA 3D printer. Different 3D printing techniques lead to a very different production process. The prototype was small, and Russ printed it as a whole using PLA wire, which took about 14 hours to complete. In contrast, the larger statue took only about 9 hours, but it was printed in two parts, using a black resin, followed by a 0.5-inch black glass base.
But 3D printing is only half the job. After that, Russ cleans the print object, removes the support structure, and joins the two parts of the final version together. It took him about 10 to 15 hours to clean up the statue of the Pinup version. Borgeson then added 23K gold and palladium leaves, spent about 8 to 10 hours on the prototype, and 15 hours on the statue, then hand-painted. What's striking is that most of the surface of the prototype retains what it was just 3D printed.
These two versions of "Freedom of Flight" clearly take advantage of the ability of 3D printing to create complex and seemingly impossible geometries, and the smoothness of its detailed surface is also alarming. In order to show their efforts in this sculpture, the prototype and the final sculpture were put together for display.
