3D printing into a new hope for the animation industry

Of all the entertainment methods on earth, nothing is more attractive to me than the frozen movie. The intensive and formal form of the film industry made me realize that 3D printing technology would become a useful ally and use it to turn the idea of animation into reality. In the past year, we have seen the famous director Charlie Kaufman using 3D printing to create the faces of the characters in the movie Anomalisa. Before that, the 3D printed fairy in the frozen movie series House of Monsters appeared. The actor is Christopher Lloyd.

Obviously, this emerging technology is developing in Hollywood, and now 3D printing has become an important part of the latest stop motion animation of the American film studio LAIKA. LAIKA is known for its animated films, such as "Ghost Mom" and "Psychic Boy Norman", and now it is seeking help from Stratasys, which has a wealth of 3D printing knowledge, to create the latest animation "Kubo and The Two Strings". a puppet. Moonbeast is one of the main characters of the film. He will be made in full 3D printing, with an exterior of 850 separate parts and an internal bracket consisting of 250 parts. This flying character is the studio's first full 3D print character, and its voice actor is Ralph Fiennes.

In addition to this full 3D printed puppet character, LAIKA relies heavily on the technology to quickly prototype replaceable facial expressions, which also earned them the Academy Sci-Tech Award. Through their RP printing technology, the character of Kubo in the new animation will have more than 22 million different facial expressions, far exceeding their previous 1.5 million capacity limits. To take full advantage of the potential of 3D printing technology, the studio turned to Stratasys for help, using their research and development center in Israel to turn many facial expressions into reality. In addition to using 3D printing, the studio uses Other special techniques to create puppet figures such as origami and feathers.

“We found a new way to print in plastic,” said Brian McLean, who is in charge of RP printing. “We went to Stratasys and worked with its Israeli R&D center. With new software and hardware, we reached a higher level in terms of the color and complexity of plastic 3D prints.”

The film is expected to be released on August 19, 2016, with voice actors including Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey, Rooney Mara and others. According to Tiangong, "Kubo and The Two Strings" is the directorial debut of LAIKA's CEO and chief artist Travis Knight. According to Knight, the film tells the emotional story between a boy named Kubo and all his funny animals and friends, who naturally replaced his family.

This stop motion animation was set in a fictional Japanese era, essentially combining the oriental and western themes to form a warm and colorful animation tour. Kubo and The Two Strings combine traditional frozen film forms with new technologies, including 3D printing.
