US Navy Shows 3D Printing Concept Submarine: It takes only 4 weeks to build

According to foreign media reports, military forces from all over the world began to turn their attention to 3D printing technology , because it can not only reduce costs but also greatly shorten the production time. A few days ago, the US Navy and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory jointly developed a proof-of-concept submarine. It is learned that 3D printing technology allows the US Navy to build a concept submarine within four weeks. If the research and development is successful, then the US Navy is likely to put into use this technology in the next few years.

The 3D printing submarine, called OptionallyMannedTechnologyDemonstrator, was developed by the US Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) and the Cadrick's Subversive Technology Laboratory (DTL), based on the submarine used by the Navy SEALs.

It is understood that the team started the research and development work in August last year. They used a large industrial grade 3D printer called BigAreaAdditiveManufacturing to produce six carbon fiber components of the submarine, and finally assembled them into 30-foot underwater tools. This has become the largest 3D printed object in the US Navy.

According to the data provided by the US Department of Energy, the cost of a traditional submarine hull is between $600,000 and $800,000, and production time is three to five months, while 3D printing technology can reduce costs by 90% and produce The time is shortened to 4 weeks. This is a big deal for the military because in the future they may quickly replace problematic parts or design equipment that can be quickly produced and deployed.

However, the 3D printing submarine displayed by the US Navy cannot be put into actual use. It is only a proof of concept.

The candidateMannedTechnologyDemonstrator team was awarded the CommandersAward Award from the Naval Sea Systems Command. Now, they plan to enter the second phase, they will build a waterproof version and plan to officially launch a prototype with ocean navigation in 2019.
