British TTP introduces FormaJet, a multi-color 3D bioprinting platform
Recently, the British technology and product development company TTP revealed its new FormaJet liquid handling platform, which is said to be capable of multi-color digital 3D bio-printing with high yields. Currently, TTP is seeking partners to develop and commercialize the platform.
TTP's FormaJet 3D printing platform integrates a "droplet distribution concept" that TTP says enables high-speed, high-density and multi-color 3D printing. FormaJet is specifically targeted at bioprinting applications such as diagnostics, tissue engineering and drug discovery.
Although not yet ready for commercialization, TTP believes that this novel 3D bioprinting technology can be used to print molecules into a variety of structures. Importantly, TTP says that FormaJet is adaptable and can be “customized to meet the specific market needs of development partnersâ€.
A functional demo version of the system can print 96 colors and multiple reagent types (proteins, peptides, DNA, organic chemicals, volatile solvents, etc.) from SBS plates, and a nozzle can digitally dispense 3,000 drops per second. .
“We hope that the FormaJetTM platform will advance our existing technology to print a wide range of biomolecular materials to meet the clear need for faster printing speeds and densities, as well as to increase the number of reagents that can be printed at once,†TTP said.
For the development of FormaJet, TTP focuses on three areas: diagnostics, drug discovery, and droplet-based digital printing. The end result is a bioprinting platform that uses droplet generation and control techniques to apply the bioprinting structure to the above applications.
The FormaJet system has a "gentle operation" that reduces the risk of damage to printed objects and materials by effectively avoiding any "thermal shock" to the printed object. TTP says the system can print SBS liquid materials and can perform 2D and "2.5D" printing in addition to 3D printing.
“There is clearly a lack of multi-color bioprinting on the market. FormaJetTM will be the first platform to digitally and non-contactly assign multiple colors in a single small printhead,†TTP said.
