Victoria University uses 3D printing to bring ancient Greek life scenes to the world
Students from Victoria University of New Zealand from Wellington are using 3D printing to reconstruct and study Greek artifacts. Led by Dr. Diana Burton, Senior Lecturer of Art History and the School of Classical Religious Studies, the goal is to give students a learning experience that interacts with cultural relics. Of course, it is impossible to really touch the fragile artifacts of the classic museums in the university. Dr. Burton and her students have switched to 3D printing .
Bringing Greek art to the 3D printing classroom
In order to put history in the hands of students, the digital scans the artifacts and then print them out by Shapeways3D. The first item scanned was “kylix,†a vessel used by ancient Greeks to participate in drinking games.
By giving students accurate representations of artifacts, they can better understand the historical context of the item. The course is able to recreate a Greek drinking scene.
“In order for students to really grasp how objects are used, through their design and decoration, they need to be able to use it and touch it in an ancient way. Dr. Burton said: “3D printing objects are the way to promote this.
Students are also responsible for designing their own ancient storage tanks (called amphorae). They first decorated the black illustrations using pre-provided templates, then scanned and mapped them. Each student integrated their own personal stories into prints, from economic hardship to the 2009 Samoa earthquake and tsunami. Then, the top five works were printed in 3D by Shapeways in New York.
So far, Dr. Burton and her students have scanned nearly 30 ancient artifacts. In the end, they hope to develop an online 3D lab at the Classic Museum. This will enable people around the world to view and interact with university collections. And Victoria University of Wellington will maintain a world of further understanding of ancient human history.
