After the basic form appears, the engraver may cut the arm, mark it separately, and install it later. This approach can make the engraver more complete control of the doll, and draw more detailed details on the first edition. The engraver also uses tools such as sickles to modify the body shape of the doll. In this process, photos and sketches are also used for reference to ensure that the dolls are as realistic as possible. Some engravers even recruit mannequins to guide their design work.
After the general outline of the body is completed, the engraver begins to modify the more refined details, paying special attention to the eyes, nose and mouth, in order to have a real expression. The designer may add a thick piece of clay to the head of the doll to fill the temporary head, and the real head is engraved with another bracket. In this way, the engraver can disregard the body and independently process the facial expressions of the doll until the finished head is again mounted on the main bracket and bonded to the body through the clay. After the head is installed, continue to engrave the neck and hair to match the doll. Then, depending on the design of the doll, the garment may be directly engraved on the body. Of course, if the costume or uniform is attached later, then the first edition does not need to engrave the details of the costume. During this process, some of the clay may be covered with aluminum mesh to avoid premature drying. When everything is ready, the entire doll is baked and reinforced.
The first edition of the engraving is sent to the manufacturer for approval. After all the design details have been finalized, the first version is used to make the mold, which is molded into plastic parts for assembly. The entire engraving process takes about two weeks, depending on the skill and speed of the engraver. This process may also be repeated several times if there is a need to make design changes to the doll. A typical design phase takes several months.
