Discussion on the classification of digital printing and printing facilities

According to the relevant standards of our country: the printing plate is "the printed graphic carrier used to transfer ink to the substrate" (see Appendix A of JB4178-86 "Basic Terms of Printing Press"). The printing plate can also be defined as "a printing plate whose surface is treated as a part of transferable printing ink, and the other part does not transfer printing ink" (see the Printer's Handbook 2007).

The printing plate is the carrier that undertakes printing graphics in the printing process from the original to the printed matter. This carrier transfers ink partly, and the other part does not transfer ink. The key is "printing graphic carrier. This standard does not stipulate how to make "printed graphic carrier", nor its form (or form). Therefore, no matter what kind of "printed graphic carrier" should be called a printing plate. This "printed graphic carrier" can exist alone, such as PS plate, flexographic plate, and then installed on the plate cylinder after imaging, or it can be directly made on the surface of the plate cylinder, such as the "printed graphic carrier (plate) ) "Is done on the surface of the plate cylinder, of course, it can also be called imaging on the surface of the gravure cylinder. Due to the development of new technologies, many digital printing technologies have different forms of "printed graphic carriers" in the printing process. For example, the most common electrophotographic digital printing, it has a "imaging drum". "Printed graphic carrier", this "imaging drum" is actually the same as the traditional gravure printing "gravure cylinder", but the material of the imaging surface is different, the imaging method is different, one of the images is a latent image, and one is tangible. But both are "printed graphic carriers." According to the definition of printing plates in China, this kind of "printed graphic carrier" (imaging drum surface) in electrophotographic digital printing should also be a printing plate. Calling this technique plateless printing is clearly inconsistent with relevant standards and industry practice.

(2) Digital printing plate: The definition of printing plate is applicable to any printing. Whether digital printing has a printing plate or not, of course, should also be determined according to the definition of printing plate. The problem was solved on the surface, but it was not solved. We often see the statement of printless digital printing in some media. Looking at the actual printing process, most of them are not without printing plates. For example, electrophotographic digital printing is often called plateless printing. In fact, before printing and inking, electrophotographic digital printing must first image on the surface of the imaging drum. The imaging process is the process of forming a printed graphic carrier. The imaged drum surface after imaging becomes a "printed graphic carrier." According to the above definition of the printing plate, the "printed graphic carrier" on the surface of this imaging drum is the printing plate. Therefore, this kind of printing should be called "printed printing" and "no-plate printing". It is difficult to connect with the existing printing standards in China, and it is also easy to cause confusion. Especially it is easy to be confused with the inkjet printing without real edition.

The process of making this digital printing plate is different from the traditional printing plate making process, and the form (form) is also different. But they are all "printed graphic carriers", which is its essence. Considering the difference between digital printing plates and traditional printing plates, we might as well call digital printing plates "digital printing plates or electronic printing plates". This is the same as the traditional lithographic printing plate in our country called "lithography", the relief printing plate is called "relief", and the gravure printing plate is called "gravure". It is consistent with existing standards and easy to understand, and it is clearly distinguished from the true versionless inkjet printing.

(3) Types of digital printing plates: So far, there are various digital imaging technology of digital printing plates, which can be said to be varied, but no matter what technology, the digital printing plates they form are nothing more than two types. The first type is that it cannot be recorded after imaging. Each time it is printed, the picture and text disappear, and a new version must be made, such as electrostatic imaging. The other type can be recorded or erased, such as DICO web Litho. Both have in common that they can be imaged multiple times, and can be erased after imaging.

(4) The main differences between digital printing plates and traditional printing plates are: â‘  Traditional printing plates can only be imaged once, and the image is constant. It is recorded immediately after imaging and cannot be erased, that is, it is used once. The digital printing plate can be imaged multiple times, and can be wiped off after imaging, that is, it can be used multiple times.

â‘¡ The surface of traditional printing plates is tangible (such as letterpress, lithography, intaglio, and stencil), and the surface of digital printing plates is mostly invisible (latent image).

â‘¢ Except for gravure, traditional printing plates can exist independently. After the printing plates are made, they can be installed (packaged, pasted, sleeved) on the plate cylinder body. Digital printing plates are made directly on the plate cylinder like traditional intaglio printing. Although the imaging device on a digital printing press is often called an imaging drum (photoconductive drum), this drum is actually the same as the gravure printing plate cylinder.

The definition of digital printing press JB / T6933-2004 "Classification of printing presses" defines digital printing presses as "printing presses that can realize the integration of computer to paper or printed matter". The author thinks that the definition of "digital printing machine is a computer-to-paper (substrate) or digital platemaking, printing integrated printing machine" may be more accurate, because "printing integration" is not clear, "digital platemaking, printing integration "

Not only does it have a clear meaning, it complies with the definition of digital printing and the standard of printing terminology, but also with the customary expressions of people today.

People often ask whether the traditional printing-in-machine (DI machine) printing machine is a digital printing machine. According to the definition of digital printing and the provisions of JB / T6933-2004, the author believes that it has been made clear that the traditional printing machine printing machine is a digital printing machine. The essence of digital printing press is the integration of computer-controlled digital plate making and printing. The traditional printing-in-machine printing machine meets this requirement.
