Nanjing Medical University lists the list of human genes affected by PM2.5

It was learned from Nanjing Medical University that the research team of Professor Zhang Zhengdong conducted a comparative screening of all human genes and listed a “list” of human genes affected by PM2.5. This achievement was published in the latest issue of Toxicology Letters, a leading international toxicology journal, which is the first potential molecular mechanism to reveal the cytotoxic effects of PM2.5 on the genome-wide level.

According to the research team members, the study revealed why PM2.5 is toxic to cells and how it produces toxicity. By culturing human bronchial epithelial cells in three different concentrations of PM2.5 culture medium and extracting their genes separately, it was found that the genes were affected by PM2.5, and the genes were changed to different extents. Increased expression, and some decreased.

Genes participate in the biological processes of the human body. Changes in gene expression may affect the body's immunity, and some may affect the repair of DNA damage, thereby causing various symptoms and affecting human health.

The expression of different concentrations of PM2.5 affected genes was also different. There were 970 gene expression changes in the low concentration group and 492 in the high concentration group. However, the researchers said that because the functions and effects of various genes are not the same, the degree of damage to the genes is not directly related to the number of affected.

PM2.5 is the sum of particles having a diameter of less than or equal to 2.5 microns. Its harm to the human body is mainly reflected in respiratory diseases and cardiovascular diseases. PM2.5 is absorbed into the alveolar wall after inhalation, and can penetrate deep into the lung tissue, causing various diseases; Many substances harmful to the human body, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, are a carcinogen and the number one killer of lung cancer.
